Christianity is not a sprint… it’s a marathon. That doesn’t mean we should hold off on the steps God has called us to do, when he’s called us to do them (that’s disobedience). Giving is one of the steps God calls all of us to do.
Before I dive into this topic, let me give you a framework. First, let’s answer the question of why do we want our members to give in the first place? We want our members to give for some general reasons like:
- When they give, we can do more ministry
- When they give, the bible says they will be blessed (Malachi 3:10)
- Giving is one of the biggest steps in their Christian walk to growing closer to Jesus (John 3:16)
Beyond these general reasons for giving, your church should have some specific reasons why members give. This is your vision. The reason why people give to YOUR CHURCH is to accomplish the specific vision of YOUR CHURCH.
Here are some examples of church vision statements:
- Our vision is to reach 10,000 people for Jesus in our state
- Our vision is to start an orphanage to help kids here in our community
- Our vision is to baptize 1,000 people for Jesus
- Our vision is to make and deploy mature and equipped followers of Christ.
Okay so let’s recap really quick. We’re trying to get our members to the point of tithing sooner, but we first had to ask why do we want them to tithe sooner? The answer is two-fold, 1) it’s biblical and 2) to accomplish our God-given vision.
However, there are two main reasons why people don’t give to your church: They know they’re called to give but don’t (disobedience) or they don’t know they’re called to give so they don’t (this is our fault). Let me be the first to say these are not the only two reasons people don’t give, but they are the majority.
If you want your church to start tithing sooner, you must addresses these two major reasons and provide your members with why they should give, both general and specific for your church.
Moving forward, where and when can we share with our people the reason for giving without making it feel like we just want their money? Normally, the moment that flows the best is during the offering talk. You can share what the bible says about giving and specifically how it relates to your church!
Use these offering moments to help your members take their next step of faith into giving!
